To train police in the future, a computer lab is utilized to create a virtual reality simulator. The programmer bases the personality of his bad guy, SID 6.7 - Sadistic, Intelligent, Dangerous (Russell Crowe), on profiles of evil killers throughout history. Convict Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington), an ex-cop, is chosen to match wits with Sid 6.7 to test its effectivness. Sid 6.7 is interactive in the VR world but also thinks for himself. The evil programmer discovers a high-tech method to mimic human cells, and he grows a Sid android in the real world. When Sid begins to terrorize the city, Barnes is released to catch him. Dr. Madison Carter (Kelly Lynch), a criminal-behavior specialist, is assigned to help Parker understand the multiple personalities of Sid. But to Sid, it's just another game in a new world and he's programmed to be the best. Intriguing special effects make this tense action thriller a sure hit with the techno crowd, but flashbacks make the story hard to follow.

In this variation of the Frankenstein story, the monster is created in the computer lab while a programmer creates life. Sid says that in the real world, God is man's creator but Sid's programmer, or creator, is inferior to Sid. Without the safeguards of a moral conscious, Sid has no feelings about destroying life, but his real thrill is the attention his acts draw. Like many popular video action games, the film has many severe, graphic killings and injuries. Barnes accepts the violence within the game context, shooting a VR hostage to get to Sid, but in real life considers the safety of others. Numerous shootings, hits, kicks and bloody bodies fill both the virtual world and the real world action. When Sid hatches, rear male nudity is seen. One of the VR characters, a sensual female who removes her robe and entices watchers to come into her world, hints at computer pornography. Not so subtle are the many uncalled for obscenities and profanities. Virtual reality may be a training tool in the future, but this film needs more virtue in its reality.
