The spectacular film WATERWORLD will refresh like a cool breeze this hot summer. In a futuristic setting, the polar ice caps have melted and water covers the earth. Earth's inhabitants have adapted to life in a new world and dream of a mythical place called Dryland. Civilization no longer exists. Humanity has been left adrift on strangely configured man-made islands called Atolls which are constantly threatened by Smokers, who are bands of pirates roaming Waterworld. The Atollers' one hope is a man known as the Mariner (Kevin Costner), part fish with web-like feet and an ability to stay underwater for long periods of time. Battling the Smokers and their ruthless leader, the Deacon (Dennis Hopper), the Mariner sets out with Helen (Jean Tripplehorn) and a mysterious little girl, Enola (Tina Majorino), on a search for Dryland and a new beginning. The $175 million movie fans have waited for with bated breath delivers spectacular sets, magnificent scenery and unparalleled special effects.

Unfortunately, the almost continuous violence in graphic stabbings and shootings takes away from the film's beauty. Some Christian-bashing is in evidence in the evil leader's name "Deacon" and also in his dialogue calling Enola their "way of salvation." A few obscenities and always gratuitous regular profanities are spoken. The sexual content includes a woman asking a man to seduce her, and though he refuses, it is implied that he later accepts her offer. Another time a man barters for sex. Complete rear female nudity occurs in one of these scenes. Despite these offensive elements and the lack of emotional warmth, some compensation comes as the Mariner's initial indifference to Enola develops into a loving relationship. While WATERWORLD offers adrenalin-drenching moments and a definite escape from a dreary summer, it has just enough offensive material to earn a negative acceptability rating.
