Clarence (Christian Slater) works in a comic book store, watches Kung Fu movies and thinks Elvis is the greatest. For his birthday, his boss hires a prostitute, Alabama (Patricia Arquoette), for Clarence. Clarence and Alabama decide to get married, and the ghost of Elvis tells him to kill Alabama's pimp. After killing the pimp, Clarence takes a suitcase filled with drugs, thinking it's Alabama's clothes. Clarence schemes to sell the drugs for quick money. Unfortunately, Elliott (Bronson Pinchot), an innocent bystander, gets caught with a sample of the drugs. In exchange for freedom, Elliot agrees to help the police break up the drug ring. Their attempt leads to a surprising outcome. More surprising, however, is why anyone would pay to see this mindless movie.

Apparently, Hollywood thinks "sex, drugs, and rock n' roll" with a lot of graphic violence constitute "true romance." The movie's title comes from Alabama saying that killing her pimp was "so romantic." What a disgusting message for teenagers of dating age! A number of graphic shootings, including a massive shootout between the police and the mob, remind you more of the St. Valentine's Day massacre than cupid. It's amazing that more than 230 obscenities are jammed into this 100-minute movie. Considering its many profanities and other crude language, there's little else in the dialogue. Lest we forget this is a "romantic" movie, we have sex and brief breast nudity to remind us. This film is an equal opportunity offender with ethnic slurs included, something for everyone. In this case, true romance is more violence and obscenities than hearts and flowers. We recommend you stay home and watch a truly romantic film with someone you love.
