Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt head a talented cast as Max and Page, a mother-daughter team who con wealthy men. Max entices men, then announces she doesn't believe in sex before marriage, hastening a trip to the altar, followed by a disastrous wedding night that drives the frustrated groom to sex with a young woman. Max always catches her new husband with this pretty young girl (Max's daughter Page), files for divorce and negotiates a huge settlement. The first on-screen victim is swarthy Dean Cumanno (Ray Liotta), who has made his money rebuilding cars from stolen parts. After collecting $300,000 from him, Max and Page assume new identities and head for Palm Beach and tobacco billionaire William B. Tensy (Gene Hackman), whose incessant coughing indicates a terminal illness. When Page falls in love with a handsome bartender (Jason Lee), will she sacrifice money for honey? This hilarious spoof on love and money targets those not easily offended by explicit sexual humor.
HEARTBREAKERS clearly should be rated "R" because of its explicit sexual humor. Max and Page seduce men strictly for money while pretending to "love" them. To avoid paying bills, the two fake accidents and contaminate their restaurant food. They lie to each other as they compete for winning the next "trophy" husband, and Max cheats her daughter out of her share of a divorce settlement. They frame the billionaire's housekeeper when she begins to suspect Max is a fraud. A male nude statue, used to bring Max and Tensy together, appears several times in closeups with many comical remarks about its "attributes." Tensy's incessant coughing makes Max's physical contact with him repulsive. Some slapstick violence includes Max trying to disable Tensy with hits to his head, Dean tied to a bed, and Page hitting her boyfriend to discourage his advances. Lack of any morals, plus 33 obscenities and crude sexual humor will shock viewers expecting a romantic comedy.
