What a Girl Wants

MPAA Rating: PG

Based on the 1958 film, The Reluctant Debutante, this comedy is the story of Daphne Reynolds (Amanda Bynes), a teenage girl who grows up without her father. Her mother (Kelly Preston), a wedding singer, left her husband, British lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth), before Daphne was born. Daphne runs away from home and goes to England in search of her father. When she finds him, he is in the middle of a campaign for Prime Minister and is engaged to be married. Dashwoods political career is shaken when he discovers the daughter he never knew he had. Daphne is accepted by her father but not by his fiance (Anna Chancellor) and her daughter (Christina Cole), who both try to get rid of her with little success. Daphnes vibrant personality collides with the high-society Brits.

Daphne must make a choice between conforming to the conservative lifestyle of her father and being true to her spirited independence. She is not disciplined for running away from home. Her father, now confronted with the fact that he has a daughter, must also make an important decision: to follow the traditions of his family or to accept his newly discovered family member. He is also faced with his new responsibility when a young man calls on his daughter. What a Girl Wants positively portrays the bonds between parents and children and the sacrifices of family love. It does not have a profound moral message and is somewhat predictable, but it is enjoyable entertainment with few offensive elements a few mildly offensive comments and some sexual innuendos.
