Based on Anne Nelsons play, this drama makes a daring attempt to capture the impact of the events of September 11, 2001. Nick (Anthony LaPaglia), a New York City fire captain, loses eight men in the World Trade Center. He will be delivering the eulogies at their funerals and is struggling to find the right words to say to give comfort to the family members. He enlists the help of Joan, a New York journalist (Sigourney Weaver), who is searching for a way to help the city she loves so much. Through hours of varied emotions, they piece together vivid portraits of each man lost. Much of the action of the movie takes place in one day as Joan and Nick work together to put thoughts onto paper. In the final scene, Nick delivers a satisfying, heartfelt eulogy, with honor, humor and poise, from a church pulpit.

The Guys effectively captures the confusion, sadness and helplessness many felt after the tragedy. Anthony LaPaglia gives one of his best performances as Nick, a man of few words but a lot of action. Sigourney Weaver gives an equally moving performance as Joan. A film that might be expected to be depressing turns out, instead, to be an encouraging memorial of the sacrifices made by those who tried to rescue as many as they could on that fateful day. Its a picture of those who daily put their lives on the line for the citizens. Viewing the film is still an emotionally draining experience. The Guys effectively tackles the grief felt in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attack without showing the scenes of the crumbling towers. The use of the Lord's name in vain earns The Guys a negative acceptability rating, but there are no other objectionable elements.
