In a metaphysical thriller that captures viewers from the beginning, 10 strangers get caught in a massive rainstorm while en route to different destinations and end up finding shelter at a remote desert motel along the highway. The gathering includes a limo driver (John Cusack), a cop (Ray Liotta), a prostitute (Amanda Peet), an aging TV actress (Rebecca DeMornay), bickering newlyweds (William Lee Scott and Clea DuVall), a prisoner (Jake Busey), and a family (John McGinley, Leila Kenzle and Bret Loehr). That night they live a nightmare as they are stalked by a killer who is murdering them one by one. They come to the frightening realization that their arrival at the hotel was no mere coincidence; they were drawn to the hotel by an evil, sadistic force. Most of them panic, but they must work together to find a way of escape from this unimaginable evil. Through twists of horror, the elusiveness of the murderer and the uncertainty of escape, viewers will remain entranced in jaw-clenching suspense.

Ed, the limo driver, is the stable-minded one, a pillar of confidence and strength for the panicked travelers. The lifestyle of Paris who is a prostitute, is portrayed as unacceptable, but she is shown to have value and worth despite her behavior. The film, however, is filled with gruesome scenes, including a decapitated head, a baseball bat shoved down a persons throat, two people smashed by cars, and many bloodied bodies in graphic images of murder. The suggestion is made that a nearby Indian burial ground may have something to do with the killings. The film is filled with numerous profanities, crudities and obscenities, including more than 25 f-words and nine s-words. Identitys MPAA rating of R for strong violence and language is well deserved.
