Real Blonde, The

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +1 1/2

Content: -3

Nothing comes easy for 35-year-old Joe (Matthew Modine), an aspiring actor who discovers most of his associates are self- centered phonies. He even becomes suspicious of Mary, his live- in girlfriend (Catherine Keener). Joe's friend, Bob (Maxwell Taylor) doesn't mind phonies, unless they are phony blondes. He is obsessed in his search for a real blonde, like that would make his life complete. Joe can only land a brief spot in a Madonna video, which annoys Mary, who is stuck paying most of the bills through her job as a makeup artist.

THE REAL BLONDE supporting cast includes Marlo Thomas as a model agency photographer, Kathleen Turner as a casting director, and Daryl Hannah as the real blonde Bob finally meets. Pseudo- sophisticates may be amused by bumbling Joe, womanizing Bob and a mixed assortment of bimbos in this plotless romantic comedy. Mary and Joe are committed to their relationship, but both have doubts about the other. They are shown in bed twice and although they don't have sex, their conversation is very suggestive. Joe fantasizes about a pretty model he meets, and the two are shown groping each other in a bar, but nothing develops. Sex is implied between Bob and a model in one brief bedroom scene, but a graphic sex scene occurs later between him and the real blonde. Simulated sex is shown during the filming of the soap opera. Scenes of men in very revealing bikini bathing suits and underwear and topless women with their backs to the camera occur throughout the film. Joe is basically an honest, caring young man. When he sees a man beating his girlfriend in the street, Joe intervenes, refusing to leave as the stranger turns a gun on Joe. Also, one model appears with a black eye, implying she has been abused by her lover. Filthy language includes 69 obscenities, 25 regular profanities and many crudities. Crude references to sex and body parts add to the offensive content. THE REAL BLONDE has no plot, no morals and no redeeming features.
